Internal temperature of the Refrigerator, freezer and refrigerator - freezer is too low

If the internal temperature of the Refrigerator, freezer and refrigerator - freezer is too low, refer to the suggestions below for step by step instructions.

Is the shopping function activated?

If shopping mode is active for an extended period of time, it may lead to this issue.

Is the temperature on the middle shelf below 4-6°C?

You can adjust the temperature either on the control panel or by turning the temperature control dial.

Adjusting the temperature:

  • Adjust the temperature by turning the temperature dial or via the control panel.
  • See the user manual for details of how to adjust the temperature. (If you do not have your user manual, refer to Where can I find the user manual for my appliance?).
  • To check that the cabinet is refrigerating correctly, place a glass of cooking oil inside the refrigerator overnight.
  • Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the oil. If the temperature is between +4°C to +6°C, the cabinet is working correctly.
  • To check a freezer’s temperature, you need to use cooking oil instead of water.
Is your appliance fitted with a fan?
  • If the fan is turned off, the temperature difference between the top and bottom of the refrigerator will be greater.
  • If the fan is switched on, this produces the most effective and uniform cooling of the air flow.
  • The temperature at the bottom may be lower, while the temperature at the top may be higher.

Switching on the fan:

  • Switch the fan on, if possible. This is usually done by pressing a button on the fan housing, located inside the refrigerator or on the control panel.
  • Some refrigerators have a display showing a fan icon, indicating whether the fan is switched on or off.
  • You will find detailed information about fan settings in the user manual. (If you do not have your user manual, refer to Where can I find the user manual for my appliance?).
  • You can check the fan by closing the door and opening it again quickly after a moment.
  • When you open the door, you will be able to hear the air flow, which will stop after a few seconds.
  • The fan normally switches off when the door is opened.
Frozen food:

Food items next to the back wall are frozen.

Is there food which is visibly touching the back wall of the refrigerator section?

  • Move any food items touching the back wall and place them at a distance from it to avoid them freezing.
  • When the cooling system is inside the back wall, any food items close to it will probably freeze.
Are the drawers fully pushed in?

If you think it is too cold in the drawers or at the bottom of the refrigerator, check that the drawers are completely closed. 

The procedure for closing drawers and the fan cover is as follows:

  • If the refrigerator has a cover for the cold air circulation fan, which can be opened and closed, you can close it. The cover is normally located above the drawers or next to the back wall behind the drawers.
  • When the cover is open or the drawer isn’t fully closed, the cold can move down. Cold air will always move down and the coldest place is on the bottom shelf.
  • To check that the cabinet is refrigerating correctly, place a glass of cooking oil in the middle of the refrigerator overnight.
  • Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the water. If the temperature is between +4°C to +6°C, the cabinet is working correctly.
  • To check that the freezer is working properly, you should use cooking oil instead of water.
Temperature distribution in refrigerators, freezers and fridge freezers:

The coldest place in the refrigerator is generally the bottom, shelf just below the refrigeration plate around the drain in the back wall. 

Until the early 1990's, there was a U-shaped cooling plate, usually a couple of centimeters below the top of the refrigerator. This ensured the correct (low) temperature on the top shelf. The cold air sinks, but heat penetrating through the sides and the door warms up the air during its descent. This meant that the coldest shelf was high up in the refrigerator and the temperature was higher, the further down in the refrigerator you went. Inserting a partition wall in the middle of the appliance prevented cold air from sinking and the temperature below the partition was relatively high.  Milk was stored on the top shelf, as this was the coldest place. The quest for low power consumption has resulted in the refrigeration plate normally being located in the back wall from the top down.In some models, the refrigeration plate extends almost right down to the vegetable drawer. This means that the coldest place in the refrigerator is moved down. In modern refrigerators, the temperature distribution is completely the opposite of what it was ten years ago. Milk now has to be placed at the bottom of the refrigerator.  Items which need to be slightly warmer can be stored higher up in the refrigerator. If you do what you used to do in the "old" refrigerator and place the milk on the top shelf, you can probably adjust the thermostat setting so that the milk is at the right temperature. However, you may then get temperatures below 0°C lower down in the refrigerator. The difference in temperature between the hottest and coldest shelves can be up to 10°C in some models. Move the items which need to be kept at a low temperature to the coldest shelves and move up the items which can be kept at a warmer temperature.

Measuring temperature:

Refrigerators:

You can measure local temperature by putting a glass of water in the refrigerator with a thermometer in it, in the middle of the central shelf, and taking a temperature reading after eight to ten hours.

  • If the temperature is not right, adjust the thermostat until you reach the desired temperature. 
  • It is the core temperature in food items which is important, rather than the air temperature in the refrigerator, as this latter temperature will fluctuate during each refrigeration cycle (between the refrigeration compressor starting and stopping).

Note: Inexpensive thermometers can give fluctuations of +/- 1-2°C (or possibly more).

Freezers:

In freezers, the temperature is measured using a glass of cooking oil. 

  • It is normal for the temperature in the freezer of combined fridge freezers to fluctuate between -18°C and -27°C as the temperature varies with the appliance's operation cycle. 
  • The temperature can also fluctuate greatly if a large amount of food has been stored at once.
  • When you set the freezer to -18°C, the warmest place in the freezer will be a temperature of at least -18°C (right outside next to the door).
  • The temperature will be lower further in.
Examples of foods and the best places to store them inside the appliance:

Please Note: Cucumbers, for example, have a longer shelf-life if they are kept at a temperature of between +8 and +12°C and tomatoes at +12-+16°C (outside the refrigerator). If cucumbers and tomatoes are placed on a cold shelf, their shelf-life will be shortened dramatically and it will look as if they have been affected by frost. It is a good idea to wrap cucumber in tin foil to avoid this happening. The normal temperature in vegetable drawers is between +1 and +6°C.

If the above suggestions do not resolve the problem, the appliance should be checked by an engineer.

If you request a visit by an engineer:

  • Place three glasses of water in the refrigerator the day before or at least 12 hours prior to the visit.
  • Place the glasses of water in the middle of the top, center and bottom shelves.
  • During the visit, the engineer will check the temperature in the refrigerator by measuring the temperature in the water.
